Common Questions About Cremation

Jun 13, 2022

Even though today, cremation services in Columbia, TN. are surpassing traditional burials, many people still have questions about cremation and the process. This is understandable since in the past, cremations weren’t as widely accepted or chosen. If you are interested in cremation but still have a few questions, you are not alone. Keep reading as we go over some of the most common questions about cremation.

What is Cremation?

Simply put, cremation is a way to dispose a body other than traditional burial. The body of the deceased will be collected and placed in a cremation container. These containers are similar to a casket but typically are made from cardboard or other light wood. The body is then moved into the cremation chamber, and using high heat, the body is reduced to its minerals and bone fragments. These fragments are called cremains and are returned to the family in either a temporary urn, or an urn that they have purchased.

Can I Hold a Visitation or Other Service?

Many people may be interested in cremation but hesitant because they believe other services are not available. This is simply not true. Families are more than able to hold services such as visitations, viewings, and even funeral services with cremations.

If the services are to be held prior to the cremation, the body can be embalmed and prepared just as it would with a traditional burial. If the service is going to be held afterwards, such as memorial service, the urn with the remains can be present.

One important note to this is that with a direct cremation, services prior to the cremation would not be available. The whole idea of direct cremation is that it is a simple and minimal process that does not include time for other services before the cremation.

What Do I Do with the Remains?

What you do with the remains is up to your and your family. With cremations becoming more popular, there are more and more ways to commemorate your loved one. Just some of the things you can do include:

  • Keep them in a traditional urn in your home
  • Scatter the remains in a meaningful place
  • Have a portion of the remains turned into a diamond
  • Use the remains in a piece of cremation jewelry
  • Scatter the remains in the sea
  • Send the remains into space

Get a cremation tattoo where the remains are infused with the tattoo ink

This is not even close to all of the options that are available today. You can see that no matter what your style, you can find an option that will work for you.
