Why Families May Choose Direct Cremation

Aug 22, 2022

Cremation services in Dickson, TN  are rising every year as more and more people are choosing this option. While families can choose to hold services before cremations such as visitations and viewings, many families choose an option known as “direct cremation”. While this option may not be the best fit for all families, for others, it can be precisely what they need. In this post, we are going to look at direct cremation and the reasons why some families may prefer this option.

What is Direct Cremation?

Even though cremation services are increasing in popularity, many people are still unfamiliar with the different types of cremations available. The most basic type is called “direct cremation” – also called “simple cremation”, this service is the most simple and minimal. This is because it does not offer time for services before the cremation such as a visitation or wake.

Direct cremation is a fast process that moves from the body being identified, and all paperwork filled out, to the body being taken to the crematory and then the remains being returned to the family. This is all done in a quick and timely manner.

Why Families May Choose This Option

While the speed and simpleness of the process may not appeal to some families, other families may consider these aspects- and others- advantages. Some of the main reasons for families to choose direct cremation are:

  • Limited budget – With direct cremation involving only what is necessary, the overall price tends to be much lower than other options. With no viewing or services before the cremation, there are no extra expenses associated with preparing the body such as embalming or renting a casket for viewing. This can help families who are on a limited or small budget.
  • Rather spend money on other areas – Even if a family isn’t on a small budget, they may wish to spend most of that budget on things like a memorial service or other tribute. With direct cremation being a less expensive option, they will have more money for these other elements.
  • Begin healing faster – Many families appreciate the timeline of a direct cremation as it can complete everything faster. For many, that can bring closure quicker so they can start to heal.
  • Less stress – When someone passes away, the family has many things to take care of. With direct cremation being simple and no extra services having to be planned beforehand, it can take a lot of stress off of an already stressed family.

Services After Cremation

Even though direct cremation does not allow time for services before the cremation, families can still hold services afterward such as a memorial service , a celebration of life event, having the remains buried, or holding a casting ceremony and releasing the ashes.
