What to Do After a Death Has Occurred

Jan 09, 2023

It is never easy navigating what to do after a loved one passes. The shock and grief will make it difficult to think clearly and since this is not a situation we encounter frequently, we are simply not equipped with the information on where to start. As providers of cremation services in Dickson, TN. we understand the confusion you may feel. That is why today we are going to talk about the steps that need to be taken care of after your loved one passes.

Acquire a Declaration of Death

The very first thing that will need to be handled is ensuring there is a declaration of death. This declaration will happen by a medical expert at the hospital. If your loved one passed away at home you will need to call 9-1-1 and have an ambulance arrive and transport them to the hospital where the doctor can make the declaration. If your loved one was in a nursing home, assisted living, or rehabilitation facility, the staff at these locations typically will take care of this for you.

Notify the Rest of the Family

This next thing that needs to be done is to make sure the rest of the family is notified of the death. This can be a very difficult phone call to make, but it must be done. When you are ready, reach out and inform everyone what has happened. If you are not wanting to tell everyone one at a time you could send a group text or ask others to help you notify everyone.

Meet with a Funeral Home

You will need to meet with a funeral home and make arrangements for services and burial or cremation. Also, working with a funeral home will ensure all required paperwork is completed and filed. They can also assist with notifying agencies such as social security.

Secure Their Property

If your loved one was living in as assisted living facility, you will need to pick up any personal items they had. If they were living on their own in their own home you will need to make sure the home is secure and all property is safe.

Notify and Secure Accountscremation services in Dickson TN

In the following weeks you will need to start securing and handling all of your loved one’s accounts. These accounts can include bank accounts, car loans, credit cards, hose payments, student loans, store credit and more.

As providers of cremation services in Dickson, TN., we understand that this can all seem very overwhelming. Just remember that not everything has to be done all at once. Simply take each task one-by-one and focus on that one task only. Also, don’t hesitate to call on other family members to help with some of these tasks. And, as always, we are here to help you in anyway we can in this difficult time. From helping with final arrangements to ensuring all paperwork is completed, we will help walk you through the entire process so that nothing gets overlooked.
