5 Tips for Speaking With Your Kids About Cremation Services

Jan 13, 2020

Have your kids started to ask you about cremation services in Brentwood, TN ? Maybe they have a family member who was just cremated, or maybe they heard someone reference cremation on TV. Whatever the case might be, you should be prepared to talk with your kids about cremation if they happen to bring it up. Take a look at 5 tips for speaking with your kids about cremation services below.

Make sure your kids are old enough to hear about cremation.

There are some kids who don’t bat an eye when they learn about cremation for the first time. There are others who are terrified of it once they know what it is. Which category do you think your kids will fall into? If you suspect they might be scared after hearing about cremation, you might want to wait until they’re a little older to talk to them about it. Tell them that you will speak with them about it in another year or two.

Be as direct as you can be with your kids.

If you decide that your kids are old enough to hear about cremation, walk them through the basics of the cremation process and explain why some people choose to be cremated rather than buried. Your goal should be as direct as you can be with your kids when discussing cremation. It’ll give them a good overview of it and dispel any cremation myths they may have heard.

Leave out any details that might worry your kids.

While you do want to be direct with your kids when talking about a Brentwood, TN cremation, you shouldn’t necessarily share every detail with regards to cremations. There are some aspects of cremation that kids don’t need to know about just yet. Gloss over those details when you get to them. Your kids won’t even know the difference.

Offer to answer any additional questions your kids might have.

Most kids, especially kids who are still on the younger side, enjoy asking a million and one questions to adults when they don’t understand something. That’s likely going to be what happens when you’re done talking about cremation, no matter how good of a job you might do. Let your kids ask you all the questions they want and answer them to the best of your ability.

Tell your kids you would be happy to talk more about cremation and death as a whole.

Parents don’t always spend time talking to their kids about topics like cremation and death. But these are topics that you and your kids shouldn’t shy away from. Your kids will grow up understanding the world a little bit better when you educate them about things like cremation. It’s why you should be open to the idea of talking to your kids about these things whenever they want to bring them up.
