Zachariah “Zach” Shawn Hayes, age 33, left this world far too soon on September 14, 2026, in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

Born and raised in Amelia, Virginia, Zach was the beloved son of Mark Hayes and Kimberly Pack and the loving brother of Amber Hayes. He graduated from Amelia County High School with the Class of 2012, where he was an excellent student who applied himself wholeheartedly to his academics while also excelling as an athlete. Zach was a member of both the football and track and field teams, earning recognition as “Boy Track Thrower of the Year.” He was also proud to be a part of the Men of Honor at Amelia County High School. Standing an impressive 6’6”, it came as little surprise when Zach earned the class superlative of “Tallest in His Class.”

But Zach’s height was only one small part of the larger-than-life presence he carried.

Lovingly known as “The Gentle Giant” and “Big Zach with a Big Heart,” Zach may have towered over many, but it was his warmth, compassion, and comforting presence that people remembered most. He had a natural ability to encourage others and often became a mentor and source of support to friends and those around him. Whether through a thoughtful word, his quick wit, or simply being there when someone needed him, Zach had a way of making people feel seen and cared for.

Zach also had a love for music and especially loved to sing. Karaoke was a favorite pastime and gave him the opportunity to simply have fun, enjoy the music, and share another side of himself with those around him. Whether singing for a crowd or just enjoying a favorite song, music was a way for his joyful spirit to shine through.

Following high school, Zach continued his education at Shenandoah University before attending Longwood University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 2018. His determination extended well beyond the classroom. Zach had a deep love for physical fitness and bodybuilding, and the gym became a place of solace for him. With grit, discipline, and determination, he continually challenged himself to grow stronger and push beyond his limits.

At the center of Zach’s life was his faith. A man devoted to God, he found strength, guidance, and comfort in His Word. He also held an especially close place in his heart for his grandmother, Betty Jean Hayes, whom he adored. Their relationship was one of great love and a treasured part of Zach’s life.

Ready to begin a new chapter and discover where life might lead him, Zach made the move to Spring Hill, Tennessee. He embraced his new home wholeheartedly and took becoming a Tennessean seriously, including adopting the Tennessee Volunteers as his team. Zach became a proud Vols fan, immersing himself in the traditions and spirit of Tennessee and embracing the place he now called home.

Zach worked as a Mixing Operator with Ultium Cells. In true Zach fashion, it did not take long for coworkers to become friends, as his warm personality and genuine nature drew people to him wherever he went.

Though his journey ended much sooner than anyone could have imagined, Zach leaves behind a presence that will not easily fade. He will be remembered for his encouraging spirit, compassionate heart, witty sense of humor, unwavering determination, and the warmth and comfort he brought into a room. Zach was a gentle giant in every sense, not simply because of his stature, but because of the enormous heart he carried with him.

Those left to cherish Zach’s memory include his sister, Amber Hayes (Matt) Dunton; his beloved grandmother, Betty Jean Hayes; his father, Mark Hayes; and his mother, Kimberly Pack. as well as the many loving uncles and aunts, cousins, friends, coworkers, and loved ones whose lives were made better simply by knowing him.

All are welcome to join the family as they come together to honor and celebrate the life of Zach. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, at 1:00 p.m. at Love Covenant Fellowship in Amelia, Virginia. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather in the fellowship hall to continue sharing memories and celebrating Zach’s life.

Zach stood tall in this world, but the size of his heart was greater still. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

The care of Zachariah Shawn Hayes has been entrusted to the caring staff of Cremation Society of Tennessee.
