Sylvia M. Gerhart, age 78, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at her home in Rockvale, Tennessee, surrounded by the love of those closest to her, Raylene Carleton-Wood and Beryl Pixley.

Born on August 3, 1947, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Sylvia was the beloved daughter of the late Julian Quintus Gerhart and Rubye Mae Hoback Gerhart. Sylvia is survived by her sister, Evelyn Marie [Ree] Bently (Appomattox, VA), her niece, Lisa Bently, great-nephew, Scott Bently, and great-great nephew/niece, Grayson and Gabrielle Bently. Surviving Cousins: David Hoback, Margaret Conner, Barbara Haynes, Doris White, Lorraine Bratton, Connie Bush, Sally Radford, Frances Breedlove-Croy, Johnny Burton, Herbert Gerhart, and Sandy Karickhoff.

Following high school graduation, Sylvia was hired as a key punch operator for the Department of Taxation in Lynchburg, VA. At the age of 21, Sylvia enlisted in the United States Army, where she faithfully served for 21 years until her retirement in 1991, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant (E8). Throughout her distinguished military career, she held numerous positions, including Operating Room Technician, Instructor in the Noncommissioned Officer School, Drill Sergeant, and 1st Sergeant. Through hard work, determination, and unwavering leadership, she earned the respect of those who served alongside her. She even managed to play softball (3rd baseman) on the Army Post Women’s Team. Her military schools included the Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, the Inspector General Course, and the Master Fitness Course. During her time in service, she was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal; the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Service Star, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3), Army Service Ribbon (2), Overseas Service Ribbon (2), the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge and the Expert Qualification Badge for the M-16 Rifle.

She valued education throughout her life, taking and teaching classes. After retirement from the Army, Sylvia attended the University of Texas and earned her bachelor's degree and teaching certification. Following college graduation, Sylvia worked as an instructor with the Bexar County Sherriff’s (TX) department teaching sexual assault awareness and child advocacy classes.

In 2001, Sylvia made her home in Rockvale, Tennessee, where she continued to live a life rooted in faith and service. Sylvia worked in customer service for Verizon. Sylvia became a member of Salem United Methodist Church in 2003, where her faith remained a guiding presence throughout her life. She possessed a kind and compassionate heart, especially when it came to caring for animals. She also held a deep appreciation for organizations that reflected her values of service and compassion, including the ASPCA, Wounded Warrior Project, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Those who knew Sylvia would remember her generous spirit and willingness to help others whenever she could. She was strong-willed, independent, and marched to the beat of her own drum. She also had a unique sense of humor, often being the only one to fully appreciate it. When she wasn't serving others, Sylvia found joy in the open road, cherishing the freedom and adventure of riding her motorcycle whenever the opportunity arose.

Sylvia leaves behind a legacy of faithful service, quiet generosity, and steadfast strength. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, church family, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions in Sylvia’s honor be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 4072 Old Salem Rd. Rockvale, TN 37153.

The Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 2 pm at Salem United Methodist Church (see above address). The service will be officiated by Pastors Ben Eschenfelder and Erik Krusell. Lunch and visitation will be held from 12-2 pm at the church. A private interment at Evergreen Cemetery will be at a different time.
