Robert Leo Fitzpatrick, Sr.

Robert Leo FitzPatrick, Sr., passed away peacefully on March 4, 2011. He was born June 19, 1922 in St. Mary’s, West Virginia to Raymond and Nancy Fitzpatrick. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, Robert served his country honorably and courageously in WWII as a member of a bombardier crew in the South Pacific. Robert was highly decorated, having survived numerous battles and plane crashes, and was invited by the Army Air Corps to tour the country with Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth on a US War Bonds tour. Following his discharge, Robert attended UCLA and was a member of the Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity. He worked for the Department of Defense and in radio before returning to West Virginia and settling in Parkersburg. He took a job as a chemist with Union Carbide and retired in 1987. Robert was known for his brilliant and inquisitive mind and deep appreciation for the well written word, the beauty of a melody, a finely crafted film, and the wonders of science and technology. He enjoyed golf and was proud to have scored a hole in one. Fearless, determined and charming, he was popular amongst his family and friends and took it upon himself to create unique opportunities and experiences for all to share. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he took every opportunity to participate in their lives. Robert was living proof that age is just a number and he retained his independence and vitality until the end. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and is loving wife of 56 years, Frances FitzPatrick. He is survived by his siblings William Fitzpatrick and wife Doris, John Fitzpatrick and wife Beverly; and Sharon Hupp; son Michael Fitzpatrick and wife Sharon; son Robert FitzPatrick, Jr. and wife Alice; son John FitzPatrick and wife Marie; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
