Obituary

Richard Benjamin Spitler, 82, of Smyrna, TN, and formerly of Springfield, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Stonecrest Medical Center in Smyrna. Richard was born December 4, 1931, in Xenia, OH, the son of the late Ferrel Spitler and Louise Whittbrock Spitler. Richard graduated from Springfield High School and received a bachelor degree from Ohio State University. Richard had served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Richard and his wife, Judy, loved to sail and travel and spent vacations sailing in the Virgin Islands, the Greek Islands among other places. Richard built the best play houses and zip lines for his children and grandchildren and always took them on crazy adventures. Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Judith Ann Stinson Spitler. He is survived by his children, Kim Spitler, Jeff Spitler, Kate Britt, and Ann-Greta Gaertner Mark; grandchildren, Justin Turvey Samantha, Evan Britt, Pat Bergman Danielle, Trevor Bergman, Ryan Spitler, Nicole Spitler, Hannah Gaertner, and Jacob Gaertner; step-grandchildren, Courtney and Deidra Gaertner; great-grandchildren, Logan Turvey, Mason Turvey, and Kailee Turvey, and Bailee Bergman; step great-grandchildren, Dylan and Aiden Gaertner; a cousin, Wally Leffel Marty; and hs grand dogs, Honey, Cocoa, and Olive who loved to sleep beside him. A memorial service for Richard will be held on Saturday, July 26, at 2:00 PM at The Waterford, 10540 Cedar Grove Road, Smyrna, TN 37167.
