Obituary

Hugh Gerald “Jerry” Bumpus, age 83, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, at The Palace Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Red Boiling Springs, TN.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh J. Bumpus and Dorothy Lankford Bumpus; sister Rebecca Hamner; children Brian Bumpus and Tracey Bumpus.

He is survived by his siblings, Phillip (Bertha) Bumpus, Sandra (Jim) Broyles, and Ronald (Lorraine) Bumpus; his grandchildren, Brittany (Jacob) Jared, Sara Breann (Brandon) Hyzer, and Jordan (Jade) Bumpus; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Trevor Jared, Blake Jared, Greison Sines, Kadence Bumpus, and Austin Hyzer.

Jerry was known for being strong-willed and determined, always wanting things done his way. Those who knew him best understood that stubbornness was simply part of what made Jerry uniquely himself.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and carried a lifelong fascination with military airplanes and helicopters. Following his service, he worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Jerry was an avid supporter of University of Tennessee athletics and could often be heard cheering, “Go Big Orange!” He also enjoyed spending time on the golf course and had a special love for animals and pets throughout his life.

In true Southern fashion, Jerry appreciated the simple comforts of life, especially a good Southern comfort meal shared with family and friends.

He will be remembered for his loyalty, his love of family, his patriotic spirit, and the many memories he leaves behind for those who loved him.

Cremation Society of Tennessee is honored to serve the Bumpus family.  Condolences may be shared at www.cremationsocietyoftn.com
