David Michael Dupuy, at the age of 78, passed away on Friday afternoon, April 12, 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee, with his family at his bedside holding his hand. Right up to the end, he repeatedly told us how happy he was to have everyone there and how he could feel all the love in the room surrounding him.
David, known to family and friends as “Big Dave”, “Big D”, and sometimes just “Dave” was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 11, 1946 to the late Hayden David Dupuy and Marguerite Estelle Guidry Dupuy. He grew up in his beloved New Orleans, but also spent his younger years traveling with his father (a former racehorse jockey and trainer) to racetracks around the country. From those travels, he developed his life-long love of horses and racing.
His other interests included music, all kinds from oldies Rock ‘n Roll to New Orleans Blues to Country to Gospel. There was quite a mix on his old Seeburg jukebox which was the center of many a party. Dave always said that all you needed to have a great party was great music, great food and great people. And he was known for throwing some great parties. He loved classic cars and never tired of talking about them or going to car shows. His own beautiful blue 1967 Plymouth Fury III convertible was for many years his pride and joy. And, Dave loved to eat - his favorite foods being New Orleans staples such as roast beef po-boys, macaroni ‘n cheese and the annual Mardi Gras King Cakes. A few years back, a local magazine published a list of the ten best places in the New Orleans area to get a roast beef po-boy. Dave carefully cut out the article, and then made it his mission to try each and every one of the restaurants listed to see if the article had it right. And he loved sports, all sports, coaching his sons as they grew up, in football, baseball and basketball.
In his early years, Dave worked in restaurant management. From there, he went to administrative management in the construction industry for Brown & Root and BE&K, a career that spanned over 35 years.
Dave retired in 2008 to “Dunroamin”, a home he and Sherry built on acreage outside of Roseland, Louisiana. He spent his days turning Dunroamin into a lovely garden-like setting where his family could gather together. In 2020, they made the decision to move to Hendersonville, TN to be closer to family.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Cheryl “Sherry” Martin; daughter Julie Ann Dupuy Dugas (Dave) of Carriere, MS; sons Michael David Dupuy of Ponchatoula, LA; Marc Anthony Dupuy (Christina) of Wetumpka, AL; Damon Lyle Ploger (Jeanne) of Baton Rouge, LA; and, Davian Michael Ploger (Aleesha) of Hendersonville, TN; his sister, Diana Dupuy Nettles of Mandeville, LA and sister-in-law Debra Martin Wenger of Ponchatoula, LA. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Meagan Ploger Benson (Graham), Dustin Dugas, Brendan Ploger (Katelyn), Logan Dupuy, Porter Ploger, Parker Ploger and Dean Dupuy; and two great- grandchildren: Remmy Dugas and Paislee Ploger. He is preceded in death by one grandson, Harley Dave Dugas. His three nieces also survive him: Laurie Nettles Guillot (Jan) of Picayune, MS; Stacey Nettles (Goddaughter), and Allison Nettles, both of Ponchatoula, LA.
Dave never met a stranger, and was known for his friendly nature, big smile, and warm personality. He loved good jokes, good stories, good games, good times. He loved family get-togethers and especially liked the competitive card games that were inevitable when family got together. And, he loved to be on the winning team.
Dave served his country bravely and honorably in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat, and the Bronze Star for heroism in battle. He paid a heavy price with the ensuing health issues that came with being a Vietnam Vet. But his perseverance in meeting his challenges, with a smile and courage, was an inspiration to all who knew him.
David Dupuy was a husband, father, big brother, uncle, grandfather, great- grandfather, brother-in-law, friend and a hero. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to any veteran organization of your choosing, as Dave felt strongly about the continued care and support of all veterans.
