Betty Jane Stanfill McPeak peacefully joined her heavenly Father on May 6, 2024. She was born on September 15, 1939, in Scotts Hill, TN, to Cletus Franklin Stanfill and Mary Blanche Jones Stanfill. Betty was the cherished third child among six siblings: Max, Billy, Margaret, Peggy, and Wanda. As the only one to venture beyond west Tennessee, Betty's life journey was marked by adventure, resilience, and a deep commitment to family and faith.
Married to John McPeak after their graduation from Scotts Hill High School, Betty and John embarked on their shared academic journey at UT Martin. Later, they moved to Auburn, Alabama, where John pursued his degree in Veterinary Medicine. Betty's own professional odyssey began in 1960 in Auburn, where she worked at the University and Alabama Farmer magazine, serving as an assistant to the Editor.
Their life took a turn when Uncle Sam called for John's veterinary expertise, leading them to Fairbanks, Alaska. There, amidst the Alaskan wilderness, Betty embraced the joys and challenges of motherhood, welcoming their daughter Stephanie and son John Alston II. After their service, the family returned to Tennessee, eventually settling in Brentwood.
In 1971, Betty reignited her career, working at various institutions, including Kimbrough Kavanaugh Mortgage and Williams Printing Company. Her tenure at the Nashville Banner, where she served as Executive Assistant to the Publisher, Brownlee Currey, spanned over three decades, witnessing transitions in ownership yet remaining steadfast in her role. From the Banner's sale to Gannett, Betty remained a pillar of support, retiring in 2015 after years of dedicated service.
Throughout her life, Betty remained devoted to her faith, finding solace and community at Brentwood United Methodist Church, where she had been a member since 1968. Yet, her greatest source of joy was her family. She was a loving mother to her children, Stephanie and Johnny, a doting grandmother to Caroline Proctor, and a proud great-grandmother to Cooper.
Betty McPeak's legacy is one of love, resilience, and unwavering faith. She touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, and dedication. While she may have departed from this earthly life, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Memorial service details coming soon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift in honor of Betty to Brentwood United Methodist Church.
